Many parts of our past go unheralded, many stories go untold. Traditional history emphasises political and military events and focuses on the actions of ‘Big Men’. History has long been politicised and I’m interested in unpicking how and why that has happened. One way to see how history is remembered is through commemorations. Every time a significant commemoration comes along there’s a flurry of articles in papers, popular history books and tv shows - in 1966 it was the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising, in 1998 the bicentenary of the 1798 Rebellion, in 2016 the centenary of the 1916 Rising. I’m interested in the state and personal commemorations and how they often reflect the time in which the commemoration occurs more than the event that’s being remembered. Described by the owner of the Chicago Herald as ‘the best living writer of English’, Sullivan who was one of the foremost journalists of her generation. From the 1870s until her death in 1803 her articles appeared in newspapers across the United States. She covered an astonishing variety of subjects including politics, finance, editorials, art, education, poetry and architecture. Double Agency travels from the cafes of Paris to the battlegrounds of Tennessee during the America Civil War, on to the American Mid-West and over the Canadian border before ending in a witness box in the Royal Courts of Justice in London to tell the story of one man who adapted seamlessly to every role he played. The story of Henri Le Caron is a story of deception, international espionage, betrayal, patriotism and murder. An Englishman masquerading as a Frenchman, he pledged his loyalty to an Irish republic while continuing to serve the British Crown. In the early 20th century Frederick Parsons was heavily involved in a campaign to ‘to beautify the streets by a common scheme of artistic excellence in the structure and decoration of the houses and shops’. According to the Times this resulted in Kingsington High Street being ‘a riot of colour’ in 1924. Tragedy struck the Parson’s in the summer of 1944 when a V1 (flying bomb) destroyed the Marsh & Parsons premises on Kensington Church Street. F.W. Parsons was injured and his son who had been injured at Dunkirk earlier in the war, was killed. One witness recalled his experience in a BBC recording: ‘One day, between D-Day on 6 June 1944 and my 16th birthday on 16 June 1944, I was delivering a telegram to a block of flats on Kensington Church Street, when about a hundred yards away a V1 bomber commonly known as a ‘secret weapon’, ‘buzz bomb’ or ‘doodlebug’, fell to the ground with a massive explosion. I remember the blast hitting me, picking me up and throwing me along the passageway and bouncing off two walls, before coming to rest.’ In 1956 Frederick Marsh sold the company. The impact of the convent on Irish architecture, garden design and urban design is substantial and almost completely undocumented. In the 18th century the Irish convent, as an essentially underground and resistance operation, had to employ a discreetly subversive means of expression. The convent complexes constructed through the 19th century were often of great urban, architectural and landscape merit. The convent is a microcosm of Irish society and this project reveals the impact of nuns on the social fabric of Ireland in an era in which women’s roles have largely been overlooked. Convents were significant buildings in Irish cities, towns and villages from the late 18th century until well into the 20th century. Nuns were influential figures in their communities, not only through their association with religion and education, but also as employers. They commissioned and re-appropriated many important buildings and landscapes, creating sites of architectural and cultural significance. Over the last five years we have visited many convents to record their architectural and landscape heritage before the re-development of such sites transforms them beyond recognition. We have combined site visits with archival materials including account books, visual sources, correspondence, diocesan records and newspapers in order to evaluate the ways in which the presence of convents impacted on the built environment, landscape and material culture of Ireland. I am Professor of Public History Liverpool John Moores University, where I am the Programme Leader for the MA in Modern History and teach on undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I am member of the Board of the Irish Museums Association, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a former Fulbright Scholar. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the past and over the course of my career this fascination has led me to explore a wide range of subjects, from 19th-century Irish radical republicanism to the contemporary museum and heritage industry, where I work as a freelance consultant. My interests crystallise around recurring themes: the darker corners of history - and the ways in which dramatic events are remembered and misremembered - the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, and how those stories evolve according to competing interests and needs. My interest in newspaper history led me to Chicago, where I discovered a forgotten murder trial that rocked 19th-century Irish America and made newspaper headlines around the world. In 2009 I returned to Chicago and the Newberry Library as a Fulbright Scholar to explore the story further, and the resulting book, Blood Runs Green (University of Chicago Press) was published in 2015. Chicago - home of the skyscraper - has one of the most striking skylines of any city I know, and my experiences there led me to develop my interest in architecture and urban history. I am co-editor with Finola O’Kane of Georgian Dublin (2008) and Portraits of the City: Dublin and the Wider World (2012). I am collaborating with architectural historian Jessie Castle on an ongoing project to map and document the surviving convents of the Presentation Sisters in Ireland, uncovering new evidence of female agency in a world dominated by men. My interest in convent architecture is tied to my research on the history of primary education in Ireland in the nineteenth century which I worked on with Garret FitzGerald and which was published by the Royal Irish Academy in 2013. The murder that lies at the heart of Blood Runs Green fed the public's appetite for the gory and the gruesome, both in print and in reality, as Chicago's 'dime museums' competed with each other to exhibit relics associated with the murder, not all of them genuine. This fascination with the macabre has evolved, over the last century or so, into what today is known as 'dark tourism', the visiting of sites associated with misery, suffering and death, and it's this fascination that forms the focus of my new book, The Darkness Echoing: Exploring Ireland’s Places of Famine, Death & Rebellion.
